In a previous post I explored polka dots, sharing a variety of ways round dots have been used by decorators and manufacturers to create a playful home environment. Today we’re moving straight ahead with stripes – another simple graphic form that can make a big impact on your decorating.
Straight But Not Always Narrow
Big stripes, skinny stripes and in-between stripes – you can find stripes of all sizes used in almost every room throughout the house.

The simple furniture and accessories in this entry might look a bit plain or boring with a traditionally painted solid color wall – but the stripes bring the room to life.

Lions and tigers and stripes, oh my! Sophisticated stripes work well with with the animal print curtains and area rug, as well as the cuddly panda. The striped walls will continue to work as the child ages and more sophisticated fabric and accessories grace the room.

Stripes for You?

I’m a striper , I would like to find out the effect of vertical stripes in a small place and horizontal stripes. How do I coordinate the stripes with my ceiling?
Amanda:
Generally vertical stripes help make the ceiling look higher (room taller) and horizonal stripes made the space look larger. Vertical stripes are more traditional and horizontal stripes add a more contemporary flair to a room. The colors you select for your stripes and the width of the stripes will impact your room also – wider stripes tend to make the space look larger. Consider painting your ceiling the color of one of your stripes – keep in mind, however, that darker colors lower the ceiling and lighter colors help it recede or look taller.
