White rooms – white, white, white. White on the walls. White on the furniture. White upholstery. White accessories. White tile. In your home would you consider an all white room as a friend or foe?
Making A White Room Work
Although it may seem easy to create, an all-white room poses some challenges. They are do-able and user friendly, if you pay attention to a few easy tips.
Not All Whites Are Created Equal
There are hundreds – yes, hundreds! – of shades of white. Before you start painting or upholstering or making drapes you need to get your whites side-by-side to make sure they blend. Notice I didn’t say match – blending them is your goal. Whites each have an undertone (read more about undertones here) so not all whites will look good together. Build your white room around those whites that blend and support one another.
Every Piece Matters
When everything in a room is white, there are no distractions. This means every piece you put in the space will be seen so every piece matters – you’ll need to choose wisely.
Use Pattern and Texture
Even in a small white bathroom there’s room to add pattern and texture – check out the wall and the front of the vanity. Imagine how boring this shot would be if everything was plain and smooth.
Make White Easy to Care For
If you’ve got small children or pets consider using white slipcovers that can be easily washed and kept looking fresh.
If you’d like a sleeker look than slipcovers can provide, upholster your furniture with outdoor fabric or at the very least use a fabric protection treatment on it.
White Unifies Your Rooms
