Jennifer Bertrand, the 2008 winner of HGTV’s Design Star TV show, submitted her observations about the trends in wall decor to us and we’re more than happy to share them with you.  See which one of these up and coming trends will work for you.

Wall Trends in Home Decorating

Designs that Stick

Innovations like peel and stick wallpapers will be big!  They can be expertly applied in almost no time at all. You can paper a room, accent wall or hallway in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost of traditional wallpaper. You don’t have to be a designer or art expert either. Leaders such as Murals Your Way.

Hand Crafted Papers and Stencils

ETSY has had a massive influence on consumer tastes and the handmade trend will continue to grow in 2012 – from a wider variety in textured quality handmade papers to hand painted stencils and designs.  Stenciling itself isn’t new, but the designs available now are amazing.  It’s an easy DIY project so you can easily be right in step with what’s current.

Wallpaper Goes 3-D

Wall coverings are literally jumping off the wall.  Designers and decor savvy homeowners are paring bold wall-scape visuals and found items to create three-dimensional designs.

Artsy Art

If you don’t want to buy a print “as-is” but you can’t afford original artwork – where do you go? Well, artsyarts.com of course. The Artsy experience is designed to assist in all aspects of the art selection from the overall design process to custom framing, all while working with an Artsy Art representative.  I (Jennifer Bertrand) have two of the Jonathan Adler pieces in my home!

Tile on the Walls

Tile is not just for the floor any more. Why not make a big impact by covering the entire wall with decorative tile?  You might be surprised by how easy it is to install while adding a wow factor that you won’t see very often.

Handmade Wallpaper

There are a lot of brilliant “mom & pop” businesses out there making handmade wallpaper.  Create a warm fuzzy by supporting small business while enhancing your walls by incorporating their one-of-a-kind artwork.

Painting Happy Colors

Why not play with color this year? Make your home feel like a big hug using color. Learn how to tell a color story in your home by utilizing websites like decorpad.com and houzz.com (or the 100 page YDH color e-book for $14.95 – click on the button in the sidebar).  You can post all your design ideas on pinterest.com where you will not only catalog your ideas but be exposed to a world of possibilities. Remember the right color is the color that makes YOU happy. There are no wrong answers.

Use What You Have

Take a tour of your house with a fresh perspective on the random items that have the potential of making an unexpected design statement.  The photo of the bike on the wall is a great example of what is possible and unique. The more unique and personal a grouping on the wall, the better!

Try hanging furniture on the wall for something truly unusual.

Wisdom and Words as Art

There’s more to words as art than “Keep Calm and Carry On.” Popular sayings, witticisms and wisdom will continue to add drama to any wall in 2012 but be larger than ever – consider breaking out of the frame and turning a whole wall into a saying with a custom mural from Murals Your Way.
