Summer for most of us means more outdoor living and a favorite outdoor sound is running water – it is so relaxing. Whether you have a large yard or a small patio or a simple apartment deck, bring the ambiance of running water to your outdoor realm with a fountain. In addition to being relaxing, it’s a great noise muffler if you live close to a busy street or noisy neighbors. Terrie and I offer up 10 of our favorite outdoor fountains for your consideration.
Cindy’s Top 5 Fountains
I found myself loving a very large, 3-tier, stone, Tuscan style fountain for which I have no space and no budget (it was thousands and thousands of dollars!). So even though it was a favorite ( in my dreams!) I’ve restrained myself and picked more budget friendlyand space friendly fountains as my top picks. If you live on a large estate go for the large fabulous stone fountain – otherwise, take a look at these 5 ”user friendly” fountains:
The Columnar Zen Copper Fountain features a stainless steel ball in a copper finish atop a column pedestal. Water spouts from the top of the ball and flows over the ball until it hits the basin below. Approximately 35 1/2″ tall, 20 inches wide, the fountain is priced at $374.75.
How fun is this for a patio or deck? The fountain continually cycles water through an adjustable water spigott as if you’re watering the live flowers (not included in the price). Tuck the 25″ high by 16″ wide fountain among other terracotta pots and your guests will do a double take on the running water. Priced at $159.91 (includes uplight for night).
The fountain water runs down the flat panel face of natural slate finish and warm copper vines pick up the warmer tones in the slate. Halogen uplighting is both beautiful and economical so you can enjoy the fountain day or night. The fountain measures 33H x 19W x 6D and is priced at $287.
I love the idea of tucking this rock fountain among a cluster of other rocks, pebbles and gravel in the garden and then turning on the water for a fun surprise touch. Totally organic looking and a totally fun way to add water to your garden environment. Rock measures 12″ X 12″ and the fountain is priced at $189.
This tabletop fountain would be a great centerpiece on your table if you have a small deck and no room for a fl0or fountain. The Mini Moonshadow Tabletop Fountain features a slate panel hanging from a dark copper power coated frame. Water flows out of the tube, down the slate, onto the layers of polished river stones and into the pool of water. Measuring 13″ tall and 12 1/2″ bowl diameter, the fountain is priced at $89.98.
Terrie’s Top 5 Fountains
When I started researching this I was once again surprised at the range of styles available. Even though some of the ones I selected don’t suit my style, they’re unusual and may be just right for one of you. I was also pleasantly surprised at the number of options available for $100 or less. It’s such a great way to add a distinctive touch to your entry or patio, and now it’s affordable too.
This fountain is unusual because of its shape. There appeared to be 3 main shapes of fountains and then myriad variations within each main category: tower-like usually with a tall narrow flat surface, tumbling shape with multiple boxes or vases splashing water downhill, and traditional tiered bird bath shapes. This one caught my eye mostly because it’s unusual. Available from Amazon.com it measures 34x17x25 and sells for $315.
Traditional styling for a formal outdoor garden. Available from affiliate Lamps Plus.com, the Classic 3-Tier fountain is $400 and made of reconstituted granite. 26×46″
I really liked the fountain Cindy found that included room for plantings. I came across this version with a more rustic, country feel and thought it would look great in a southwest garden. The faux wood tub in the Whiskey Barrel Planter Fountain is 54″ diameter and is priced at $109.
I like this small scaled solar powered fountain. The site explains that it has a new and improved battery storage capability making it possible to use even on cloudy days or in the evenings. Available from affiliate Simply Fountains, it measures 18x18x25″ and retails for $150 ($100 w/o the storage capability).
A little twist on a tiered fountain, this modern spiral fountain is lit for nightime enjoyment. Made of fiberglass, Only Outdoor Fountains sells the Alpine 2-Tier Halogen fountain for $420 and it measures 18x15x29.
