Over the holidays we took a break from our regular “Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down” feature in order to share holiday decorating ideas with you. Today we return to our Wednesday ”Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down” schedule, giving us a chance to review a variety of rooms, styles, furniture, colors or whatever pushes our button each week. It’s all about personal preferences -sometimes we agree, sometimes we disagree (wouldn’t it be boring if everyone liked all the same things?!). We’ll give you input and share the rationale behind our opinions - and we encourage you to weigh in with your thoughts …. do you agree or do you think we’re totally off-base?
TERRIE GIVES THIS SEASIDE ROOM “THUMBS DOWN”
The room pictured below is at first glance an attractive room and has a couple of good things going for it. However, I have 2 main issues that if changed would make this a stronger room.
The main thing that jumped out at me when I first looked at the room is the odd, and to me unattractive, scale of the small blue chairs. While a change in scale can be good in a room, these look like little kid chairs – too low and narrow to be comfortable for an adult. To me they throw off the whole room.
My other bone to pick is with the window coverings. I don’t like the mixed look in draperies with the pull drapes over the French doors in beige and the Roman blinds in blue/brown. This is a perfect example of how different style window coverings might be necessary in a room since the purposes are SO different. However, I think the coverings should be made of the same fabric. It creates too much of a visual jumble to have different fabrics. The blue Roman shade fabric would make great draperies, banded with the brown at the bottom for continuity. If you like the brown band. Which I don’t. What is your eye drawn to first in the picture? Those blinds. The brown trim is far too much contrast in an otherwise serene room.
Cindy, what do you think?
CINDY GIVES THIS SEASIDE ROOM “THUMBS UP”
I like this room – and there is no question in my mind that the blue chairs are kid sized chairs! They reflect the same style as the full size beige chair but they are far too narrow and close to the ground to be considered adult chairs. And what a great idea – they work well with the adult furniture, the dark blue upholstery won’t show kid dirt easily and it sports a cute fish print that ties to the room but appeals to kids, and the chairs would help keep the kids off the the light colored furniture while giving them a special place of their own. Plus, how cute to reference the fish print in the kids’ chairs with the fish shaped pillow on the sofa!
The window coverings don’t bother me. I like the brown band around the Roman blinds as it visually brackets the upper ceiling area just as the dark brown wood frame and legs on the furniture bracket the floor area. Take away the brown band on the blinds and everything above the window seat would be too light and washed out and boring to me. The chocolate band and dark furniture wood both anchor the room and give it some weight. The dark rod above the French door drape helps vertically bracket that area too. I also like the fact that the drapes are not matchy-matchy with the Roman shades. When I visualize them closed it seems they would be a nice extension of the sofa color up the wall, framing that seating area softly – with the blue blinds on the side adding the punch of color.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
