Lighting has many functions: task lighting to provide bright light to work under; overhead ambient lighting to make moving through a room safe; accent lighting to brighten a dark corner or bookshelf. Most rooms have a combination of all 3 levels of light.

I’ve found a couple of great lighting options – just because lighting has a serious function doesn’t mean it has to look serious. Look at this whimsical hanging lamp – and clustering more than one in a corner would be SO dramatic.

These assemble-yourself beauties could sure add a touch of fun – and they’re made of an eco friendly wood, designed by Hector Mendoza, Mexico.

Cool organic shapes make a lighting statement.

These stuning blue babies are designed by Benas Burdulis and inspired by the architect Gaudi. Gaudi has long been a favorite of mine – I was introduced to his work in design school. Then I was lucky enough to travel to Barcelona and see his work in person. He was a visionary – the man never met a right angle he could love. His work was very organic and explored curves and waves and circles in exquisite detail. These lamps are clearly accent lighting ….. but what a cool accent!

Just for the heck of it, here’s a photo I took of a bench at the Park Guell in Barcelona that was designed by A. Gaudi. It edged a broad playing field on the top of a hill and provided a fabulous viewpoint of the city and a perfect place to rest your feet in style.
