Good Stuff! Very nice piece here. I just added this blog post to my favorites.
Terrie, my office decor is dreadful! How can I perk it up without overstepping corporate guidelines?
Any help will be appreciated. Trish
This sounds like a good idea for a whole post….let me do a little research and come back with a suggestion or two. Meanwhile, hope you’ll try again for tomorrow’s giveaways.
Hi Terrie! As someone who lives in a small NYC apartment, I have to say that organization is key for me. I’m always searching for great new ways to organize without it being too utilitarian!
For example, right now I’m attempting to fit a filing cabinet into my living room decorating scheme in a way that doesn’t seem too out of place. So I’m trying to decide if I should go with an attractive filing cabinet (pretty impossible to find so far, at least in my price range), figure out how to decorate/alter a filing cabinet so it won’t stick out too much in my living room, or come up with a filing cabinet alternative that will still allow me to organize all my paperwork. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
Wow Jocelyn, that is a challenge. I guess my first thought is that I’d move away from a traditional file cabinet entirely. Do you need 4 drawers? If so I’d look at two 2drawers side by side or a credenza type arrangement that could act as a table top. Or look at buffets meant for dining rooms. Something with few drawers but that has door fronts and then put baskets/bins inside for your files. That way it isn’t office furniture so will blend with your decor, but creates hidden file storage.
Hope that helps!
Hi Terrie! Thanks so much for the helpful hints. I also enjoyed looking at Don’s prints.
You’re the winner Lori – Congrats! I’ll get back with you on details of how to claim your giveaway.
I love using fresh flowers for an instant pop of color. Consider using non traditional items as vases for a twist. I have used everying from an old boot filled with sunflowers in the mud room to colorful berbers in a vintage coke bottle that I wrap with a string of pearls for my daughter’s shabby chic bedroom.
Fun ideas Martha – I’ve seen photos of flowers in boots but since I don’t own any, I haven’t tried it…..maybe a sneaker???
Large cloth napkins with colorful graphic designs make great accents for coffee and end tables; they are relatively inexpensive, even more so when on sale, and are great for changing things up when the seasons change.
Upscale thrift stores, consignment shops, and garage sales are great places to pick up a new decor item to update your look. I found a thrift store that directly benefits homeless women and children and seems to draw from donors with especially good taste! My home, wardrobe, and wallet have all benefited from this great find! Often a very small thing that feels fresh and new to me is all it takes to brighten my day.
I agree, it doesn’t necessarily take a Neiman Marcus doodad to make an impression – lots of times it’s just some little fun thing. I also rummage my closets every now and then and pull out things I’ve totally forgotten I own. That’s almost like shopping!
Terrie, So much to think about and be inspired by–love the photos and the timely article! I checked out Don’s etsy and I think I like the sunflowers and the dragonfly shadow best
. Hope you get lots of comments today, too.
