Often referred to as the fifth wall, but largely ignored, the ceiling can actually play a strong role in the decor of your room.  By far the majority of us leave the ceilings painter standard white.  Why?  Probably because it’s a pain (literally) to paint a ceiling, and if it’s taller than usual or angled or covered in nasty popcorn, it’s just easier to leave it alone.

However, consider this:  painting the ceiling or adding architectural interest to it can vastly improve the ambiance in the room.  Simply painting the ceiling can give the impression of increased height, can visually lower the height to make a room more cozy, can add pizzazz and personality, and more.

Earlier this year Terrie wrote about Emerald - Pantone’s Color of the year.  In her post she shared photos of some beautifully decorated rooms dressed in this rich green.  The addition of emerald could brighten and freshen your home, especially with spring approaching.  If your budget doesn’t allow you to completely redecorate according to color trends (as is the case for most of us!) you can still spice things up and enjoy a touch of this wonderful color by mixing some emerald accessories into a room or two.  It’s a perfect way to celebrate upcoming St. Patrick’s Day!

I had a post on bedroom wall treatments planned for this week.  Then I received my new issue of Better Homes and Garden and was so inspired by the color they featured throughout the magazine that I decided to change direction.  Green.  Shades and tones of beautiful greens – all so evocative of spring.

It’s sunny today in Seattle, a touch of early spring with lawn mower noises and people outside, the perfect incentive to start thinking about spring.  (I know it’s a little early, but I’m willing to get a jump on it if you are.)

If you’ll remember, I shared Pantone’s color-of-the-year selection in January (emerald).  Emerald is a bright, strong, elemental green that  is usually better as an accent color.  The greens I’m falling in love with are soft, enveloping, nature-infused greens that are livable and will blur the line between indoors and outdoors.

When people step through your front door, their first 15 seconds in your home makes an impression!   It doesn’t matter if you have a grand foyer with lots of space, a small entry that feels more like a pass-through than a room, or a door that opens directly into your main living space – you want an entry that welcomes family and friends.
