Thumbs up to open shelving! We keep our everyday dishes and glasses on open shelves and we love it. It is a great display feature and much less boring than cabinets. I’d love to replace our one cabinet with glass doors with open shelving because you can’t see the things in there as well as you could if it was just open.
My kitchen will not have upper cabinets, because there are a lots of windows.Do not want the upper cab to hide the windows.Think I will put an open shelf.I thinks open shelf ( windows also) is a plus for small kitchen like mine
I like the look of both but because I live out in the country of California’s Central Valley in Victorian farmhouse, the dust is terrible. I choose to have glass on the top cabinets. I am a visual person (but not neat and tidy) so it works for me. Hey, it is cluttered and if I was to choose to have a showing I may have to clean up. But for everyday it looks great .
I think glass doors are a terrific option. It reduces the visual bulk and all those cabinet doors, lets you have a peek of the beauties inside but addresses the cleanliness issue. We didn’t really show that as an option, but it’s a strong one that people should consider.
Thanks for the comments Diane.
Some of the most beautiful kitchen designs have open shelves – in addition to the ‘open shelf’ look, they have less wall cabinets, which makes them not so ‘top heavy’.
I am sooooo taken captive by beautifully styled photos. Don’t those two ladies in the Coastal Living photo look like they are having so much fun in that kitchen–not a bit worried about dusting and cleaning (heheh)! Both your arguments are very persuasive. My pragmatic side says, “OK, who is going to have to get out the ladder and climb up there and dust and wash all those pretties–even if it’s just once a year–yep, ME!” Aaaaack! Yet, on the other hand
, why can’t I have just a few open shelves, displaying just a few things, that I could reasonably keep looking “perfect”? Or, maybe, I could compromise with one or two clear/frosted/seeded/antique-y, lighted glass doors. Then I could display some colorful or not stuff and not worry too much about dust and grease. I have to give thumbs up to both
options–I can see how both could work! Thank you for encouraging the discussion

Displays are lovely!! Great way to show your style. I don’t mind cleaning up but i DISLIKE VERY VERY MUCH washing dishes even in the dishwasher
I don’t want to wash dishes before AND after I use them – that’s why my open kitchen shelves house only my teapot collection. Adds some interest but not dusty dishes!
Thumbs up! Let’s see some “character” in kitchens…one long line of cabinets is not. The key may be size of the kitchen, as mentioned. I have a small cabin kitchen and have used a “baker’s rack” for years and it is SO handy. I use most of the essentials every day…then, I guess that’s why God made dishwashers. Loved the displays. THANKS!
