So you're not trying to flesh out any specific idea if it comes to you during this process, then? You're just trying to jot down as many different ideas as possible?

Terrie, I would say it's important to let your mind have "stream of consciousness" -- letting one idea/picture subconsciously associate itself with the first random thought or other image/idea that occurs -- like free word association games you may have played as a kid. This starts the brainstorming mechanism. Neurons start rapid firing here, making connections to past experiences, colors, ideas, etc...I jot these down whenever they occur; otherwise, if you're like me, you might forget. I write notes on my magazine clippings. I keep these in subject binders. This initial step takes on a life of its own and is extremely energizing, but let it rest. Go back to these ideas when you're no longer in "hyper distraction mode" so you can really focus on how you can use them. This may not sound specific, but these are the steps I use for my creative process and it seems to work for all areas of art and design in which I am involved. -- Cheers, Ashley

Terrie and Cindy,

Great post! I'm a illustrator turned decorative artist and also now working in the design industry so I often get inspiration from interior design oriented magazines. In fact this was one of the very first posts I did on my Art Is Everywhere blog -- to show how art inspiration can be in the most mundane places and is often overlooked -- just have to keep an open mind to see it.

I'm reluctant to put a website link because it might be considered spam and that is not the intent.
Here's the post if you want to check: http://www.ashley-spencer.com/ArtIsEverywhere/?p=14

I've really been enjoying reading your blog. I get you all in my alerts almost daily. Keep up the good work.
